A pneumatic, rechargeable, multi-dose auto-injector for rapid deployment

lifeAID®

Most auto injectors deliver a single dose, but real emergencies often demand more. Overdose reversal, severe hypoglycemia, and anaphylaxis can require repeated injections within minutes. Mass casualty situations amplify that demand. LifeAID is a pneumatic emergency auto injector with three rechargeable cartridges, enabling rapid multi dose deployment from one compact device when seconds matter.

TOOL

Problem

  • Most emergencies require repeat dosing.

  • Up to 36 percent of anaphylaxis cases and nearly 80 percent of opioid overdoses need more than one injection.

  • Single use auto injectors force responders to stop and open a new device for every additional dose or patient, interrupting care when seconds matter.

Auto injectors deliver only one dose and must be replaced each time.
This adds time critical steps during repeat dosing and multi patient care.

Solution

  • LifeAID integrates three pre filled sterile cartridges into one pneumatic injector.

  • Responders can deliver repeat doses instantly without switching devices, keeping treatment continuous, fast, and controlled.

Opportunity

  • Enable immediate repeat dosing by replacing single use spring force with a controllable actuation system.

Instant Response

First dose fires immediately for rapid action.

Cartridge Reload

After each injection, replace the used needle cap. Then turn the Rotary Grip clockwise until it clicks and locks. The tactile and audible feedback confirms the next cartridge is ready.

Fast Priming

After three doses, the actuator resets upward. Pump three times until it locks, then rotate to unlock and LifeAID is ready again.

LifeAID’s triple-cylinder system delivers uninterrupted, back-to-back doses, eliminating delays when every second matters.

Impact

Keeps care continuous by delivering multiple doses without interruption, allowing responders to stay focused on patients—not devices.

Form

The cylindrical body efficiently houses three rotating cartridges and keeps each dose aligned to the same injection point. The form is driven by tight internal packaging and consistent external usability.

User Interview

These interviews with field medics, military personnel, and first responders grounded the project in real operational needs and shaped the requirements for speed, repeat dosing, and reliability.

  • Doctor – Augir

“I’ve been in situations where a second dose was needed right away, but I only had single-use injectors available. When time matters, switching devices slows everything down.”

  • Medic – Pacheco (6 years)

    Medic – Pacheco

“In the field, I can’t sort through gear. If a patient needs more than one injection, I want to perform it quickly without searching for spares.”

  • Squad Leader – Contreras

    Squad Leader – Contreras

“My biggest concern is making sure my team has enough medical support during an emergency. If more than one person needs treatment, single-use injectors disappear fast.”
